E-commerce - Apparel Store

Assalamualaikum WaRahmatullahi WaBarakatuhu,

I came to the US from India on an F-1 student visa and suffered an injury while studying in the US. I'm still recuperating from my injury but have to work to remain in status. I would like to start an online apparel store which will have men's thobe, salwar kameez, blazers, shoes, watches, etc., and women's Abayas, casual dresses, makeup and cosmetics, kids' clothes, shoes, etc.

I would like to add products of intimacy like perfumes, scented candles, chocolates, flowers, intimacy toys, lubricants, soft lights, soft pillows, link to nasheeds etc., with a caution consent and agreement that the customer is married or intends to engage in intimacy within the confines of marriage.

Is this permissible? Will my income be considered as compliant to the Islamic Law?

Please respond at your earliest convenience as I'm running out of time; and my speech is affected after my injury. Call will be a difficult option and email response will be greatly appreciated.

JazakAllah Khair,

Nabeel Tanveer

If clothes or other items in the business are in the form of living things or have pictures of living objects printed or attached to them, and the sale of pictures is also the intention, then trade in such things is illegal.

If the prime object in trading is toys but they implicitly have pictures affixed to them, then their trade will be permissible and the income will be “halal". However, if the picture is of a living being, it in itself is a disgusting thing, so it is better to avoid it.

If the clothes are trousers, shirts and jeans, etc., and they are tailored in such a way that they do not reveal body shape and do not expose body contours, then it is permissible to do business in those products and the income earned will also be halal.

But if the clothes are tailored tight-fit, or skin tight which reveal body shape and its contours, or make noticeable the private parts, then as it is “makrooh” to wear such clothes, it is also “makrooh” do business in those kinds of wearables.

Intimacy toys, if they are meant to satisfy women's sexual desires in an unnatural way, then the sale of such products is not permissible, as they promote obscenity. it is necessary to avoid such objects.

Send in details of the lubricant and what is meant by it and its purpose, to provide you ruling on this.
