Assalamu alaikum,
Our group leader is saying that they plan to leave Mina in the night due to traffic jams in the morning and road closures. I read that we have to pray fajr in Mina and wait till the sun is up before moving toward Arafat as part of the Sunnah of the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. Is it sunnah or wajib? please answer soon, as I am in Hajj. JazakAllah wassalam.

For immediate assistance please note the practice of Rasulullah Sallallaho Alyhi Wasallam:
Rasulullah Sallallaho Alyhi Wasallam on 8thof Zul-Hijjah which is known as “Yaumul Tarwiyyah” would read Salatul-Fajr in Makkah and then leave for Mina. He would perform Salatul-Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha and Fajrin Minabefore leaving for Arafat on 9thof Zul-Hijjah.
Leaving for Mina during the night time is against the Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallallaho Alyhi Wasallam. Similarly leaving from Mina for Arafat during the night time is also against the Sunnahof Rasulullah Sallallaho Alyhi Wasallam.
