Zakaat on gold - No Income

As salaam alaikum Mufti Saab,

My mother has around 20 Tola gold Jwellery and she gets pension of $300/Month. She uses her $300 to pay her health insurance and lives with us. I wanted to know if its farz for her to pay Zakat on her 20 Tola gold....She dont have any money to pay only option will be to sell some gold and pay zakat... Please let us know.

If one year passes on your mother's gold, then Zakat will be obligatory on it:

a. Either give two and a half percent of its gold in Zakat.

b. Or find out the total price of gold from the goldsmith and pay Zakat on it by selling gold up to two and a half percent of the total price.
